Grandma's Embroidery

Since I don't have anything new I thought I would share an embroidered piece that my grandmother did many years ago. She died in 1948. I have no idea what year this was completed. I believe she made it as a pillow but when I was growing up my father had it in a frame.

You can tell when a die hard quilter is tired...

When packages come in the mail and you are to tired to open them and they sit there until you can muster up the energy, and then wonderfulness...Fat Quarter shop's BOM, month 6. And...
This was packed with French General

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, French General!

And this wonderful book came as well along with...Love Lori Smith!

THE new cookbook by Ree Drummond. One of my all time favorite blogs, Ree is living my life for me... I get to watch from the sidelines. Thank you Ree! The cookbook is great, I love it and can't wait to muster up some energy to actually cook. soon I hope. Next week there will be 5 days in a row off from work. ahhhhhhhh

My baby flew away...

Sunrise on Wednesday morning on my way to pick up my daughter and take her to the airport for her all day trip back to Arkansas.
This was her final request before leaving California. Apparently there is no Carl's Jr. in Arkansas. yummmm, Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich. I will miss her terribly. Can't wait for her to move home!

Between Friends

Gobble Gobble Fabric Line (yummy)
If I remember correctly this fabric line is Harmony

Darlene at Quilting Daze is offering her wonderful pattern called "Between Friends" for free on her blog. I made two of these quilts as soon as I saw hers . The pattern is supper easy and I think it is striking in any fabric line. I have decided to make a 3rd one using Rouenneries. Both of my quilts are at the quilter right now!

11/9/09

Suprise!

I had a wonderful surprise on Saturday. I was told by my oldest son to be at his house at 6 pm sharp for a family dinner. I couldn't be early. OK, so I showed up with my youngest son and family, and there was a wonderful surprise waiting for me! My daughter that lives way to far away had come for a surprise visit. She is pictured here holding her niece (my granddaughter). A good time was had by all!

And on Saturday morning my son (on the right) and my best friend's son (on the left) went to the Saturday morning farmers market in Chico. The young man on the left lives in Fairbanks Alaska and the young man on the right lives in California. They have been friends since they were born. It was a GREAT weekend visiting with family and friends!

Frustration

I found this small free embroidery online someplace. I can't remember off hand. sorry. It had a lot of lines around the bow area (which is in the middle and bare now). I couldn't figure out the lines there were so many of them so I think I will just fill in with hearts or flowers and call it done.
This is the slowest quilt block since time began, for me that is. It is the BOM from Material Obsession in Australia. I do love it but it is hand pieced. Who has that much time???? Not me baby. So I have done one little line each time I find a spare minute which there are not a lot of in my world. A bit on the frustrating side for me. I finished the middle circle last night and pinned on the center. What a royal pain! There is a whole outside circle to go with this and at this pace I will finish block 1 next century. I may give it up because it is more trouble than it is worth for me. I never learned to piece by hand and I am not great. so much for this project. And I am officially 3 behind. Very frustrating.

Some fabric and a little farm life

Thanks go out to Sandy Gervais of Pieces from my heart for the lovely give away that I won! She was kind enough to send me this nice layer cake of her new fabric line, Frolic. It is very cute!
And last night my son brought his work home and got the burn pile ready. As I was taking this picture he hit a wasp nest. That was interesting.

And not knowing what he was doing with the tractor I quickly went out and picked a few more tomatoes and eggplant. They just keep on coming. A good friend from Alaska is visiting now and we are having a family dinner on Saturday so it will all be used. there are even still watermelons on the vine right next to the Persimmon tree that is loaded. Weird year!

The age old Quilters question has been answered

This image is one year old. It is of Grandma Grace Gallaway, in this image she is 94 and was on leg one of a cross country trip. Today she is 95 and in the hospital recovering from pneumonia. I had a long quilting conversation with her last night. She has been quilting since she was 11 years old. That is 84 years! She came across this country from Oklahoma to California in a covered wagon. This wonderful woman only has a grade school education but has put many family members through college and has written a book and has 2 more in the works. She is amazing. Anyway last night I asked her the age old quilters question. Have you made all the quilts that you wanted to make? And her answer was YES! So there it is. It can be done in a lifetime. Just thought you would want to know...

ahhhhh Rouenneries by French General

I went by Honey Run Quilters last night on my way home and dropped off a quilt to be quilted. And I got to see Rouenneries. All I can say is that I really really really like it! I bought the charm pack so I can choose which fabrics I will buy. I am looking through my many quilt books to find just the right pattern. Gone are the days of just buying a lot of the fabric. The economy has forced me to plan!
This is Honey Run's new sale bag. When you buy the bag and use it you get a 10% discount at the 4 stores listed. So it will be in my purse at all times, just in case.

11/3/09

nasturtiums still in bloom

It is November 3rd and my nasturtiums are still blooming, in fact they are doing better than they did over the summer. We are having 80 degree days. I am still picking tomatoes and eggplant. Weird "fall" weather.

A few Quilty things

Received this book in the mail from Amazon for the quilt challenge with Nicole of Sisters Choice.
I finished this Jan Patek kit, hand appliqued and hand quilted. My first real applique job. I like it!

And block #5 of the Fat Quarter Shop BOM... done!

I even used the left over Gobble Gobble fabric to make place mats!

Craft fair at Honey Run

Honey Run Quilters had a craft fair last Thursday and I happened by when dropping of my Gobble Gobble quilt to be quilted. I bought these two cute stockings for my grand children.

And before this fabric was gone I just had to have a yard of it!

Halloween with family

My DIL is quite talented and carved these pumpkins for her children (my precious grandchildren)

Then she impressed me with taking this picture without the flash. cool isn't it!

And she swears by this new tool I brought back from Palo Alto recently. It is a pumpkin gutter, for lack of a better term. It scoops out the seeds easily and quickly.

This is Bam Bam my 3 month old grandson and his mom

And this is Pebbles and her mom my 15 month old granddaughter

Here are the happy parents of my grand kids with pebbles and Bam Bam.

And there they go off to trick or treat .

Go to Dandelion Quilts and read her blog about donating to the Salvation Army. What a wonderful giving idea.

The Gobble Gobble stripe will also be a binding on my Gobble Gobble quilt that I haven't had time to send to the quilter. The red, was on sale and I loved it so it is for my red stash. These were from The Thrifty Needle shop. who also has great prices.

Another BOM in the mail

In yesterday's mail I received my Fat Quarter Shop BOM. I think I am now officially swimming in unfinished BOM's. Hopefully this weekend I will get a handle on a few of them.

10/20/09

Quilty things

I received my Sue Ross BOM over the weekend. this is block 3. I am now officially 3 blocks behind.
Over the weekend I played with scraps and made a few of these cute pumpkins with the free pattern so graciously given by Patchwork Pottery quilter Laurraine Yuyama. Using Gobble Gobble by Sandy Gervais. Love that great fabric! I have one out of 4 place mats I am making for Thanksgiving done. I will show them when completed. (soon I hope)

And a small finish with a free little stitchery I found online someplace. I am sorry but I cannot recall where. I believe it was an Australian designer.

Give away from Pumpkin Patch Primitives Shoppe!

There is a give away that you should know about and go on over to check out. It is from Pumpkin Patch Primitives Quilt shoppe! They are giving away some awesome fabrics! If you go over Tell them that Lizzie sent you!

Weekend

A birthday bottle of wine. So I have fun cooking. Over the weekend I did a Thanksgiving run through. I try to do it every year. Especially because I LOVE turkey. And there are always a few things I forget before the big day. So if I do a run through then they are fresh in my memory for a flawless Thanksgiving dinner. (at least that is the plan)
A yummmmmy turkey

Pumpkin pies that were oh so good

And a new bread machine! My DIL is a master bread maker now. She made 4 loaves over the weekend and each one was better than the last one. This loaf was Cranberry raisin bread. yummmm

And here is a snapshot of the Buttes on the way home from Oroville yesterday. The body of water is the Oroville Forebay.

Hummm, seems that I didn't take any pictures of quilty things. Tomorrow...

10/13/09

Sue Ross BOM started

After seeing this BOM on the Australian Blogs I just had to have it. So I contacted Material Obsessions Quilt Shop in Sydney Australia and now I am signed up! This is the first block. Entirely by hand. My first attempt at hand piecing. These two pieces were my first two parts.

10/12/09

BOM Finishes!!!

I worked on 2 BOM's yesterday. This one is the Civil War BOM from the Thimble Creek Quilt Shop. Those are 6" finished squares. A lot of little pieces. Interesting how they all look perfect until you see them on the blog and notice a mistake. grrrrr, now I have to go back and fix the top left square.
And this is the Fat Quarter shop's BOM. Now to start the other BOM's I have to get through before the new month begins. whew...

10/9/09

A walk at lunch

There is a nice store in Chico CA called Chico Paper. I was told by a good friend and fellow blogger that the items hanging are blog worthy. so I went for a walk on my lunch hour to check them out. Indeed they are interesting. As I was standing outside on the sidewalk taking the pictures a woman stopped by and mentioned that she worked near by and thought that these were just wonderful. She also mentioned that they are made by a woman in SF CA. I did not inquire as to who made them inside the store. But please note that the images were taken through the front window with a bit of reflection. I would love to have a nice big kitchen to adorn one of these light pieces.
salt and pepper shakers

tin and tea cups

coffee pot and colander

And on the walk back to the office I passed a Chico place that all will know. The Madison Bear Garden. If you are ever in Chico CA and want a really good burger stop here. It is amazing inside.

10/8/09

Some new fabric and the new Kaffe Book!

Z and S Fabrics really does do a nice job of packaging. It is so nice to receive a package in a pretty bow. I ordered these Australian fabrics to go with my collection. Yes, collection. At some point I am going to make a killer Australian themed quilt.
These are the fabrics...

And the cherry on top... my book came in the mail. wahooooooooo. This is the quilt I am starting to work on. Right now it is in the thought process. Hopefully by the weekend it will be in the cutting and sewing process.

10/7/09

A finish and a new BOM

I finished my little Rufus dog from Hatched and Patched last night. 7" square.
The mail brought me my new Civil War BOM from Thimble creek

These are the yummy fabrics.

10/6/09

A Few Finishes

My local fabric store had a program where you bought a certain amount of fabric and used a punch card. When the punch card was full you got $40 worth of fabric. Well that program finishes up this month so I thought I had better cash out my full card. I decided on Faffee fabrics! 17 quarter yards. yummmmmmmm
Over the weekend I finished putting the binding on my Halloween Quilt and have given it to my grand kids.

And I finished my small Pumpkin quilt. Here is the front and ....

this is the back. I used scraps from a couple of quilts. Gotta love scraps!

10/1/09

Starts and finishes and a birthday wish

A birthday pie for me! My dear DIL put the candle in it and made it special. Lemon Meringue, yummmmmm This came in the mail. I forgot I had pre-ordered it from my book club.

And these two BOM's came all the way from Australia. They are a Material Obsession 10 month BOM. Can't wait to get started!

I am learning to applique and this is my next project. It is cut and all ready to sew. Now to just find the energy and time.

Here is a better picture

And a small finish. I bought this cute little dog at the Diablo Valley Quilt show from Thimble Creek. My sewing machine is in the shop for it's 1000 mile tune up so when it comes home I can finish this and many othere small projects.

This little gem I found on the web for free and it quickly came together.

Here is one of the blocks from Willowberry free BOM.

And a free childrens coloring project I found on the web and made it into a stitchery that will become something for Halloween when I get my machine back.

And a finished applique project that I am now hand quilting.

Here is an inside shot from the pay counter looking toward the street.

Here is what I bought there.

On the way home the fun begins!

I stayed one night at my brothers home. He and his wife are the greatest. I am very proud of my younger brother for all of his wonderful accomplishments. This plane is one of them. He designed, built, did the paint job, and has designed the website. He is amazing. This was the first time I have seen the plane. All I can say is WOW. It is beautiful!!!!! This image was taken late at night so the light wasn't as good as it could be. Please take the time to look at his site. next stop.... Alden Lane Quilt show.

The beginning of the journey

Before going to visit relatives in Palo Alto I went into the garden and picked a few things. I didn't make a dent in the bounty. My DIL even canned tomatoes. They sure do make great tomato sandwiches.
My first stop on the trip was IKEA in East Palo Alto. I couldn't wait to see their fabric. They have a great selection and at great prices. But it is heavy weight cotton so I didn't buy any. But it sure is pretty.

more IKEA

A few days later I stopped at this store... nice!

This little gem now houses my sissors.

Then through the nice streets in Stanford CA. on to the shopping center.

Stanford Shopping center used to be just a bit upscale. Now it is over the top upscale.

More Stanford shopping center.

Then on to Crate and Barrel. There was Kaffee fabric napkins for sale for $6.95 each. Who knew?

I have a lot of great images of the two quilt shows I attended on Saturday the 26th. I will show them tomorrow.

Vicksburg BOM

I ran across the Vicksburg BOM at the blog of Dawn Heese called Linen Closet Quilts and thought I would join. I have a thing for Eagles since my father collected and respected the American Eagle. I always think of him when I see them, so I thought what better way to have Eagles in my home and to think of him often. I finished the first block last night. I am just learning to applique so I thought I would use the button hole stitch since there are so many little hills and valleys.

9/16/09

A couple of finishes and a beginning

Finished reading this book. interesting. Would recommend highly.

Finished the last block of the Gail Pan BOM. Now I just have to find the time to put it all together.

Block #4 of the Fat Quarter BOM club arrived last night.

Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler Fall 09' Magazine Release Party!

Honey Run Quilters had their big party/sale last night. A good time was had by all! Here is a beginning of the party shot of the store and the owners race car. See the top part where Honey Run Quilters is written, isn't it cute!
And here is Evelyn standing by the race car. Evelyn is a great Honey Run employee and friend!

And here are two other Honey Run great employees and friends, Gayle and Joann.

And here is my quilt hanging in the store. This will be a class in November. Hopefully! If I can pull it together.

And I meet a fellow blogger last night. Meet Dorrie. Isn't she cute? She is standing in front of the quilt she made. Isn't it adorable? I believe it is also a class.

In the work room was the big drawing for the JUKI sewing machine. We waited patiently until Carmen (the owner with her back to us in the pretty brown dress and cute heals) drew the winning ticket. See the quilt on the wall? It is featured in the magazine and there are kits available.

And here is fellow blogger PAM winning the JUKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weekend off from blogging

My baby is coming home for a visit. My baby is now 23 and lives to darn far away. I will be back next Wednesday. I wish everyone a happy and healthy Labor Day weekend. Drive safe..
This cute little bag comes from a free pattern I found on a blog called PS I quilt It came together fast and was very easy. I can see many more of them in my future.
This was the ride into work this morning . The image is a bit darker than it really was but the moon was amazing and the golden glow of the rice fields was absolutely beautiful.

Direct TV vs VERSUS and Comcast in a nutshell

Well here goes, I am very disappointed in Direct TV. I am an avid PBR watcher. Yes, I quilt and watch Bull Riding every week! Now Direct TV has taken VERSUS off of it's programming. I am not a happy person. I don't know the problem but can only surmise that it is some form of greed. I e-mailed Direct TV and their response is below. So my salary is cut by 10% and I can't watch the entertainment that I love on the weekends. I am a little depressed right now.
Here is the response that I got back from Direct TV. I guess I will be cutting down on my programming because why pay for the premium channels when there is nothing I want to watch.
Response (Alexander C. - 100162796) - 09/01/2009 09:40 AM

Thanks for writing and sharing with us your feedback regarding Versus. We understand how important Versus is to you and we are sorry that we have had to remove it from our lineup.

Our agreement with Versus expired on August 31, 2009. DIRECTV made every effort to keep VERSUS a part of its programming line-up, but due to unsuccessful contract negotiations with Comcast, the owner of Versus, the channel has been removed. Comcast regularly tries to charge us amounts well in excess of what is fair and reasonable to carry the programming they own. Their reason is obvious: they want to stifle competition from DIRECTV. Comcast's unfair terms undermines DIRECTV's ability to offer our customers the best possible value. If we simply accept these terms, we would have to absorb the unreasonable costs Comcast wants to charge us, and in turn we will be forced to increase the rates our customers pay. We do not want this to happen.

Halloween Quilt top done

Here is a little quilt I made over the weekend. It is probably around 50" square althought I didn't measure it.

And a little close up.

8/31/09

slothful weekend

Here is a little 100% cotton washcloth I am knitting, for the 2nd time. It has been so long since I knitted I didn't take it off the needles properly and had to re-do. grrrr. Now to finish it up tonight correctly.
I made these cute little Halloween trick or treat bags for my grand kids. They are made with the legs of their dads cutoffs.

And I have finished one Dresden Plate center. The yo-yo's are done I just have to sew the other 11 on.

And this is where I was at 8 A.M. on Saturday morning. Honey Run Quilters yard sale. Before that I had my blood drawn and then went to Starbucks for some energy, liquid form. I did a ton of errends and got home about 10am. It was hot!! My son said he was at the bank and the temp. was 107. no wonder I didn't feel like doing anything. I was going to put primer on my new bench seat on Sunday but it was way to windy. Oh well.

8/28/09

Friday already! busy day yesterday

I finally picked up my new bench (with some help from my son and his truck) from Crazy Crab in Durham. When I look at it I see so many possibilities. I love the store's STICKS and Mackenzie-Childs and plan on doing what I can to make this bench a fun place for my grandchildren. I will paint, and make pillows so it will hopefully be a fond memory when they grow up.
The sun set last night was so beautiful. The glow on the rice field behind the house was stunning.

Here is a close up of my little sunflowers.

This was about 7:15 last night taken from the garden area looking towards the Buttes.

I went to the dentist yesterday and am in the process of getting a crown. So while the numbing agent was wearing off I decided to be quiet and sew. I used some of the fabric that Gayle gave me and made a whole lot of half square triangles. If all goes as planned the quilt will be done by Monday and into the quilters. More to come.... thanks very much Gayle.

And I had a lot of little pieces cut from the Civil War BOM that I just couldn't throw away so I made them into half square triangles and will make something with them over the weekend as well.

8/24/09

A challenge done and a tad bit more

My friend Pammy challenged me last year to use some fabric in a quilt. Over the weekend I ran across the fabric and after seeing Jo Morton on Fons and Porter I remembered a 16 patch that would be cute, easy and fast. So I made this little quilt.
This is the back.

I got this quilt back from the quilter and put the binding on it. I am in the process of finishing the centers. More on that later.
This package came in the mail on Friday so I could finish the Darlene's 16 patch quilt.

I finished up this part of my next Darlene's 16 patch. Now to put it all together.

A very nice friend gave me all of this fabric. Her name is Gayle and she is very generous. I know the image isn't the greatest but the fabric sure is!

8/19/09

Thimblecreek Quilt Shop Civil War August BOM done

I had one block done on Sunday and the rest ready to go. Didn't find time until last night. Lots of little pieces and HST's. Finished size is 6 1/2 inch.

8/18/09

old/new to me water glasses

I bought a set of 8 water glasses from an antique store in Durham CA called Barbs BuY-gones. She gave me a great deal and they remind me of my youth. A restaurant that my father used to frequent had these and the minute I saw them memories came flooding back. I had to have them. Isn't the color wonderful! RED, my favorite color!

8/17/09

BOM, Darlene's 16 patch revisited, and some pot holders

The fat Quarter Shop #3 BOM came in the mail on Thursday
and I finished it last night.

I got the 35 16 patches done for my next Darlene's 16 patch quilt. I had to order a charm pack today to finish so it will be a few days until I get back to it.

And with a few of the layer cakes from Gobble Gobble I made 2 pot holders

using this. It is a bit krinkley and slippery to sew with but it is ok. I made a scrap pot holder that we have in the kitchen to test out how it works.

Testing for leaks

Yep, My son bought a vintage tent trailer and was testing it for leaks. It held up pretty well. He is getting it all ready for deer season. run Bambi, run!

Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

What can I say, this book was so fun to read. I recommend it highly. I love her books, they are light and fun. I finished it on Saturday evening, couldn't put it down until I was done. 2 A.M.!

A visit to Avenue 9 Gallery in Chico CA

The gallery is showing the Fiber Art of Phyllis Cullen and Kristina Adams. Their work is very nice and is well known within our community. This group is the work of Phyllis Cullen.

and a close up. Isn't this piece wonderful.

And here are pieces from Kristina Adams (no blog)

and a close up

And these two are the work of a very special artist named Dolores Mitchell. She was one of my College Professors and I have a special place in my heart for her. And I also love her work. When I was a student a few years back we used to get together with a group of artists and play Mexican dominoes. What great memories.

Books in the mail

Since I work for the State of California and we are being furloughed I have to cut 10% out of my budget. And it is already a very small budget. I had to finish up my book club commitment, and decided on these two books. I have also cut out Netflix and renewing magazine's and little things like Starbucks Mocha in the mornings. I now take my lunch every day and have even cut back on fabric. That by far is the hardest thing to do. Right now I am finishing projects and getting ready for the lack of paycheck next month. It can be done, it just isn't fun or easy. There will be no vacations, or long car rides. I will be borrowing books from the library instead of buying. The wardrobe will not be renewed this year. ... whew. But, at least I will have some extra Friday's off and I can sew. My year long project is to dig into those 9 very full plastic bins and make some scrap quilts.

8/11/09

Shopping and a BOM in the mail

This came in the mail last night. My BOM from Thimble Creek Quilt Shop. I had hoped to finish it last night but I got as far as taking it out of the envelope and taking a picture and that was all.
I went to Honey Run Quilters after work yesterday to drop off my Dresden plate quilt and spotted something new to me. Insul-Bright made by the makers of Warm and natural. At $1.98 a yard I thought I would try a yard and see if pot holders would be more heat resistant.

8/10/09

Darlene's 16 patch and a couple of others are now finished!

I first saw this pattern on Quilting Daze and immediately wanted to make one. So I did! I used Jan Patek's Harmony by Moda for the fabric. Just this morning I saw on The fat Quarter Shop site that fabric is now on sale, grrrrr. oh well, I love this quilt! Thanks Darlene for the great idea!
And my Dresden Plate quilt is done and will go to the quilters today after work. I used a 2006 RJR small pink polka dot for the border. Man did that fabric frey. I had threads all over the place.

Here is a close up of the block, notice that the middle is not done yet. I have plans for them and will show on my blog when I finish in a few weeks.

I also finished this small quilt last night. This picture was taken before the sun went down and I hadn't finished the binding yet. If you look real close on the middle section (blue) you can just barely see the birds that I hand quilted. I still need to put the beaks on the birds. Hopefully will get that done tonight.

And I am right on schedule with my Gail Pan BOM. If only I could say that with all the others I am doing. oh well....

8/6/09

O Happy Thursday!

What a beautiful morning it is! There is a threat of rain in our area and I always love the clouds around the Sutter Buttes.
Then about 2 minutes later the sun came over the Sierra Nevada Range and there was a full moon over the rice fields with the wild cranes that live in the rice fields.

On my way home last night I passed this lovely store. One that I often visit. Crazy Crab in Durham CA. If you ever get a chance stop in. The owner, Pam shown here is very nice and carries so much great stuff. When I drove by a very nice metal bench was sitting on the porch and I had to stop and ask how much. I then put it on lay-a-way, we talked for a few minutes and I left. I got two blocks away and realized I had not taken a picture for my blog. I quickly turned around and went back. Pam had already closed the store and was in her truck leaving but got out to see what I wanted. I told her I had to have a picture of the bench. In the two minutes I was gone she had already put the bench in the store. So she opened the door and I got a picture of it. Oh the design and decorating possibilities! I am selling a wing chair that I bought on Craig's list a few years back for room in my place. No one ever sat in it anyway.

Here is the bench. Just imagine some wonderful fabric cushions or cushion and some great pillows. This is my new favorite piece of furniture.

As we were walking around her store talking this was hanging on the wall and I commented on how nice it looked. She GAVE it to me! I think I will change it out a bit, maybe take the metal things out and paint the frame and give it some life. All in all it was a very good drive home last night.

The Lovely List:Giveaway

Check out this blog and you might win this:

Beautiful Morning

This is The Sutter Buttes. Sacramento Valley. Home.
Inthe background to the left of the rice dryer you can barely see Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. If you click on the image you can see it much better. I love my drive to work on beautiful mornings.

Dresden Plate and a wagon spoke

I have finished all 12 of my Dresden plate 18" blocks. I have tried to figure out how to set them and put them together in a pleasing way but am stuck. I tried a lot of the fabrics in the Dresden plate as sashing but none of them spoke to me. So after work today I am headed to the quilt shop for some fabric auditioning. Hopefully I will find a fabric that speaks to me and works with all 20 fabrics.

And this is my first little spoke on my journey to finish the Wagon Wheel pattern by Sandy Klop. The colors didn't turn out real well on this image but the blue is a light blue and looks great with the Kaffee fabric.

Ode' to Gee's Bend

I made this quilt in honor of Gee's Bend Quilter Mary Bennett. I looked through these books (below) and found one that I thought I could make. This is the closest I could come. But I like the quilt. I made it a few years back after going to Sisters and seeing the first installment of the Gwen and Freddy duo book.
Wonderful books that every quilter should look through!

This is the quilt I got inspiration from.

And, this is the quilter, Mary Bennett.

8/3/09

Weekend Quilt

Granted, not the best image in the world. This image shows the pieces laid out on the floor before I moved around the blocks to a more pleasing arrangement. I finished sewing the top together about 9 pm last night. This is an untitled quilt as of yet. The fabric line is Harmony by Moda. I used a layer cake and a charm pack. both of which I have half left. I have an idea for the border using what is left.

7/30/09

my addiction to quilt books continues

This nice book came home with me last night. I love it. Now to just find the time to learn how to applique. If only quilt shops would teach technique and not always just how to make a certain quilt. I love to do handwork and would love to do applique. Maybe I will find someone some day to teach me how!

7/29/09

mini Civil War basket quilt done

Finished the binding on my mini quilt after work last night. I also went to a near by town (Gridley) and went to the farmers market and ran into an old friend. Nice to see people I haven't in a few years. This morning I was scanning some blog's and Valori Wells has updated her blog with pictures of the Sisters Quilt Show, and there is a picture of my Kaffee Quilt! Talk about excited to see my quilt again. I got chills when I saw it. Have a great day!

This image is from Valori Wells blog. Mine is the little quilt on the left. I know, it wasn't front and center but it is there!

Wonderfulness

Can't wait to get started on the Carpenters square pattern. The only thing holding me back is deciding what fabric to use.
My good buddy Pammy brought back these wonderful items for me from Sisters. I love them all and have been enjoying reading the new Jean Wells book. It is even signed by Jean! Pammy is the very best!!! Thank you Pammy!

This little 7 inch square basket is done using left over fabric from my civil war BOM. I just hate throwing those little pieces away. So I pieced this together and hand quilted it and hopefully will get the binding on tonight.

These lovely shoes came in the mail last night. I have to have Birks or I can't walk. All the pairs I own are old and broken down. So time for a few new pairs.

On Sunday I stopped at Honey Run and picked up a little fabric. Isn't this beautiful? It is now living in the Kaffee drawer with like fabrics. I will find a project for it soon I hope.

yummy fabric!

And I was at an antique store on Saturday in Oroville CA just looking around when I spotted these 2 little orphan plates. This is the pattern my father had when I was growing up so it makes me smile. I bought the 2 plates for $1.00 and thought it was quiet a deal. They are desert plates and will probably have a plant sitting on them at some point.

7/27/09

A couple of new projects

Getting warmed up by making some coasters (mini quilts) for my DIL
And this is a project I started using the fabric Line Harmony by Jan Patek. I saw this quilt on a blog and just had to make one. Check it out yourself at Quilting Daze from July 21st and titled Thriller. I love that quilt !

This pattern was on the front of a book called Applique Quilt Revival and the quilt is called Bluebirds and friends by Nancy Mahoney. I loved the quilt but didn't want to make a whole quilt so I adapted it and made it smaller. Now all I have to do is hand quilt it.

6 projects done for my new grandson!

This birth announcement was a collaborative effort with my DIL. I believe they will go out in the mail this week. I love fabric post cards!
This quilt I made before I knew I was having a grandson, how convenient it was to have it already finished. He won't be using it for some time but at least he has a few quilts from grandma already. It is a twin bed size.

This is his baby quilt. Brown bunnies running all over it. It is an adapted pattern from Bunny Hill also using that fabric line.

And here are 3 flannel receiving blankets. You can never have to many of these.

7/21/09

Sister's Quilt show sale!

Well, I had a very good day yesterday. Pammy posted such nice things about me and my quilts. I got to view two sites that had images of my quilts (see yesterdays posting) and the best part is when I got home... there was a check in the mail from Jean Wells. Yes, signed by her! My cowboy quilt sold. I am so pleased. The experience with the Sisters Quilt show has all been positive. I think it is very well run and completely organized and professional. Bravo to the Stitchin post and Jean and Valorie Wells for a job well done! Thank you.

7/20/09

My two Quilts hung in Sisters!

Thanks to my friend Pammy I was able to see what my quilts looked like hanging in Sisters at the Quilt show. If you would like to see too, go to this blog and read what my very special friend was kind enough to say about me. She is a wonderful person through and through! Her name should be in the dictionary under the words TRUE FRIEND.

And the 4th picture down in the post from July 17th on this blog there is another picture of my quilt. (far right) Wow, talk about my head swelling!

Finishes!

Block 2 of the Fat Quarter Shop BOM, done!

7:15 am at Chico Farmer's market. Beautiful produce!

Veggies

Peaches, yummmmmmmm
That pretty much sums up my weekend. It was smothering hot. I usually like heat and have no problem with it but not this weekend. I only ventured out when I had to and stayed inside and caught up on some sewing and visited with family.

7/15/09

Yummy book in the mail and a catch up

Over the weekend I finished 5 of the 7 free BOM blocks from Gail Pan's blog. (see side bar ) and so I am caught up on that one. whew...

And this yummmmmmmy book came in the mail last night. LOVE IT! This one is on my to do list for sure!

oh so nice!

And yet another yummy quilt in this book

I received the 2nd block from the fat quarter shop BOM. Now I am officially 2 behind. (grrrr)

7/13/09

I'm a grandma again!

My son and DIL were blessed with a son on Saturday evening. He is a sweetie! I took care of Miss Emma while they were away at the hospital. What a difference a year makes. Love these children! So I didn't get any quilts done this past weekend. Plenty of time for that, the important thing was family!

Chenille-It

This is what the pillow looked like before I washed it to make the chenille.
This is what it looks like after one washing. Kind of a disappointment. I really did expect to see chenille. This just looks like unraveled fabric. Hopefully with more washings it will look better. If I use this again I will put more rows of chenille-it together to make it fuller.

7/9/09

Goodies in the mail!

This was waiting for me at the post office yesterday. A very nice package! A WIN from the Knot-y girl Stitchery Club. Nice fabric and the new Cosmo embroidery thread. Thank you for the very nice gift!
Then a 2nd package from a shop in Portland Oregon called The Quilted Castle. I found them recently online and have been very happy with their prices and items for sale. Give them a try. Here I have a Moda Glory Charm pack by Kathy Schmitz, 2 yards of Charlotte fabric by Anna Griffin for Windham, and a cute little Moda Christmas Bake shop box that makes 2 little Xmas stockings.

And here is a detail with the cute little pattern showing.

7/8/09

another BOM and a finish

I got my 2nd civil War Fat Quarter Club BOM on Monday. It is from Thimble Creek Quilt Shop. Now I have to do the first and 2nd one asap so I don't get behind like I am on all of my BOM projects.

Here is my finished little stitchery. Love this pattern. I hand quilted it as well. It is from Joanna Figueroa's Fig Tree Quilts book.

7/6/09

Lazy Holiday weekend

I had a very restful holiday weekend. This nice little treat came in the mail. And as soon as I make the pillow that is planned I will show it. Chenille - it looks like it will be a lot of fun.
More flag day farm fabric. yummy!

And a finish that has taken me a year to complete. 30's fabric.

A 2nd finish. My soon to be born grand son will have this bunny hill brown bunnies quilt.

This is the quilting on the back of the Bunny hill brown baby quilt.

6/29/09

It was a busy weekend

It was a busy weekend, first it was my Granddaughter's 1st Birthday Party. She had fun with her own cake, and we had fun watching her have fun with her cake.
These two books were purchased for my extensive quilt book collection. yummy quilts in those books!

A new pattern came my way, I am looking forward to making it soon.

And then there was the 100th anniversary of the small town of Richvale CA.

A centennial sign

antique tractors

And the man to start the show off.... They are dressed in traditional Swedish dress as the first settlers of Richvale were Swedish and many of those families are still in the community. The heat was something! 107

6/25/09

to Sisters they will go...

This Quilt is headed off to Sisters to hang in their show in a couple of weeks. The top photo is of the whole quilt and the bottom is a closeup of one quadrant. If you look really close you will see the quilting is in the shape of horses running. This quilt will be for sale in Sisters.

This is last night's finish. A table runner for Miss Emma's 1st birthday party. Just in the nick of time. The party is Saturday.

Here is the 2nd quilt going to Sisters. This is a Sandy Klop pattern and I love it.

And this is the back of the quilt. I couldn't find a Vanna White to hold my quilts last night so I had to lay them on my little design wall. That is why they are so wonky.
I will be back on Monday. Have a great weekend!

6/24/09

Time to catch up on BOM's

This is my BOM for the Civil War FQ Club from The Thimble Creek Shop.
And this is my Fat Quarter Shop BOM. I intend to finish these blocks up over the weekend.

A finished book. I have gotten behind on the series and am catching up.

6/23/09

Crab Apple HIll, Old Glory, DONE!

This is a close up of the hand work.
And this is an image of the completed quilt. The pattern is Old glory by Crab-apple Hill. This was a gift from my friend Pammy. Thanks again Pammy. This was a fun and fast small quilt!

6/22/09

Long may she wave, COMPLETED!

It's always a good feeling when a project is completed. This one I really liked and I think it turned out well. The pattern is by Kathy Schmitz.

6/16/09

The next step done

Well the beads and buttons are all added. The next step is to quilt this top. I love it. Thank's to Pammy for this gift. The goal is to have it finished and up on the wall for the 4th of July! If you click on the image it should show a detail of the beads and buttons.

6/15/09

Weekend's over back to work

This is a quilt top I finished over the weekend. Called tradition by Moda.
My work area. I like it!

My old tool box now holds all the right tools

A piece o cake table runner pattern my DIL put together. Cute! for my grand-daughter's first birthday party which is very soon. I started to quilt it last night.

Quilty projects in progress and finished

This is a kit I bought and am in the process of putting all of those squares together. The plan is to have the top completed by Sunday.

The Dresden plate quilt I have started. 2 18" squares of 12 done. I am using Kona white as the background and have big plans for finishing this one.

A detail of the square. All 20 fabrics are different and they are all from my good friend Pam's old stash.

A finished quilt made from Fig tree Quilts fabric line called Dandelion Girl. The pattern is from a jelly roll book and it was a jelly roll.

A doll quilt made from Pammy's Left over blocks. For Sweet Miss Emma's 1st birthday, which is coming up pretty soon.

A flimsy that will be my soon to be born grand-son's first quilt

A detail of the quilt. The fabric is Bunny Hill. So darn cute!

A stitchery that I have been working on for awhile. The stitchery part is all done now I have to get into my scraps and put on the border and hand quilt it. whew...

A detail of Long may she wave..

This pattern is a gift from Pammy that I started last week when I was sick. I just have to do the bead work and finish the sides and it is done as well.

The sweetgrass gift

This is a gift I received yesterday from my good friend Pammy. She recently took a trip to South Carolina and brought back a cute little Sweetgrass basket for me. Isn't it just the cutest basket you have ever seen?

6/9/09

Garden area's

This is a little area on our deck. I moved a few of the pots around over the weekend and put the fountain in the middle. I have a few little frogs living in the fountain.
The other side of the deck. Emma's blueberry bush and a few succulents that a friend from work gave me. (Maggi)

6/8/09

Snake repellent or snake oil???

My son bought this for the house since I won't go in the back yard any more and clean up a pile of brush. The last time I tried there was a snake on the pile and I said no more for me. My son tells me it works. He used to work for a pest control company and ran across people that swore by it. Lets hope so.
My DIL mother's day present from me. Isn't it cute? The sweet little bird house was purchased in Durham CA. at the greatest little store ever. It is called the Crazy Crab. (no blog)

This was another purchase I got at Crazy Crab. And old antique fireplace grate. I love it. It is cast iron and very heavy. My son offered to paint it for me in my favorite color, RED! not just any red but International Harvester RED. I love how it turned out!

Done, dry and ready to take in the house and use for either magazines or sewing supplies or anything else creative I can come up with.

5/28/09

my little herb garden

This is my little herb garden.

Over last week I did a few things

I finished reading this book I picked up at an antique store for $4. copyright date 1903. Very quaint. I love these old books. They are from a time that is so different from today.

I finished putting the binding on this quilt. Made from a Harvest Home by Moda layer cake. Quite easy and I like the finished product.

This is our scare crow or coyote. There are wild rabbits around our place and they don't like coyote's so hopefully this will keep them from eating our garden plants before we get a chance to have any vegetables.

For the Memorial Day weekend I bought a new flag. I love the look of a flag on the outside of the house.

Another view of the garden. I need to get out there and do some weeding and make it beautiful.

Here is a little area on the deck. I love my little rabbit. I bought it after seeing the movie Miss Potter. Such a sweet movie.

This is a shady area next to the deck that came out a little dark. My son and daughter in law gave me this cowboy on Mother's day last year. They have a pretty good sense of humor and told me that he is the perfect cowboy. They also gave me the sign because I love cows and well, cowboys.

5/22/09

Civil War Fat Quarter Club beginning

Got this lovely in the mail last night. My new BOM from Thimble Creek Quilt Shop. It is a civil war BOM and I am looking forward to getting started.
This is the start of a test block. I am trying to do a spiderweb quilt without paper piecing. So far it isn't working. The measurements don't work the same so I am trying to do the math. (ick) Does anyone have a pattern that is not paper pieced?

5/19/09

Dresden Plate and coaster

I made this Dresden plate over the weekend. It is approx. 18 inches square. It is hanging on my "wall" at work.

This is a coaster that I made for my friend Pammy. And then under it is my wrist rest at work. Not the greatest images but there they are. I got on the bandwagon and used the edges of fabric to make something small.

Oklahoma windblown girl

Grandma Grace is making a few dozen of these squares and explained to me the title. She says that in 1928-32 in Roger Mills County Oklahoma near Durham there was a cyclone and a woman's quilt was taken along with her home. The quilt was found miles away and kept and the sunbonnet sue name was changed to windblown girl. Here Grace is pointing out the scarf on the cap looking like it was in the wind. I love hearing Grace talk about her history. She has lived an extraordinary life and her memory is as sharp as a tack.

5/18/09

Soon to be 95 years young

My dear friend Grace is soon to be 95 years young and is going strong. She has been quilting for much of those years and does all her work by hand. What this long life has given her is time to quilt! She is in very good health and sits and makes squares by the box full. I was lucky enough to see her Dresden plate boxes (yes boxes) yesterday. She uses a cardboard pattern, draws on the back of the fabric and cuts out every piece with scissors. After the pieces are cut she either puts them in a box and will eventually get around to making them into quilt tops or she hand stitches every piece into a square and eventually a quilt top. She has made a quilt for each and every member of her large family. She is a marvelous woman! Grace traveled from Oklahoma to California via covered wagon and has done many amazing things in her life. She has even authored one book and is working on a 2nd book and all with a 3rd grade education. She even is in the process of publishing some quilt blocks. But I can't say how yet, it's still a secret.

Rice seed being flown on

This is the scene across the Northern California Valley as rice seed gets flown on. The sound of these planes is like large mosquitoes all over the place. They fly like acrobats around and under power lines, and are very fun to watch.

I think summer has arrived

This was sunday about 6 pm under a shaded patio. warm and a bit humid.

5/15/09

Yet another Dresden Plate

I made one Dresden plate from one piece of fabric. I need to find the right background and then sew it down. I am liking the Dresden plates. They are fun and easy. Thanks to Loft creations blog for showing how cute they are.

5/14/09

Finished a book

The Geography of bliss by Eric Weiner. Interesting but not that great. I much prefer Bill Bryson and his travels. But don't let my review taint you, read it for yourself and decide.

5/13/09

Entry in Sisters Quilt show

Lynn Brown Art. This is one section. (top left) closeup.
This is the whole quilt. The quilting, which can't be easily seen is horses. Done at The Sewing Studio in Durham CA by Shelly. She really did do a nice job!

updates

After seeing a blog called Loft Creations I was inspired to start a Dresden Plate quilt with the nice fabrics my friend Pammy gave me.
This fabric will be used to make a quilt for my yet to be born grand-son.

Get this at your local store! Morning Star Quilts does good!

This is the article. Pammy and I shop here! Congrats Marsha at Morning Star!!!! Thanks again Pammy for getting this magazine for me!

Gifts from Pammy! A pattern and some fabric to go with the pattern.

Backing for the next quilt.
whew... seems like a lot of stuff but really I haven't had time lately to do much. Hopefully that will change real soon and I can get some more projects to the next step.

5/8/09

It is a beautiful morning

My drive this morning was so beautiful. If you look real hard that is Mt. Lassen in the background. This is looking the opposite direction and in the background it the Coast Range

And this final picture was about 30 seconds before the sun rose over the Sierra Nevada Range. Can you tell I really like my commute to work?

5/7/09

More goodies!

This kit came in the mail last night. I wish I could remember where I got it. It was such a great price. It looks super simple. Now I just need the time to start a new project.
I got this small quilt back from the quilter the other night. I finished the binding and it is ready for a label. Yea, I know. A study in contrast that failed. But I did learn a valuable lesson.

The PINK quilt. Wow! is it pink. Not my usual color choice but the group of FQ's were on sale and well, I couldn't resist. So it is done and waiting for the label as well.

And finally, I need to finish up my book club committment so I ordered these books. I have gotten way behind on this series.

5/6/09

New fabric and a beautiful sunrise

This is the yard an a half I ordered so I would have some background for my Harmony jelly roll, layer cake and charm pack.
These yummy civil war fabrics were on sale at Hancocks Fabrics. Oh the new catalog is wonderful. So many great fabrics!

And finally, this morning there was a beautiful sunrise. The road I drive is so remote that there is no traffic, so I stopped in the middle of the road and took this picture. What you are looking at is the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in the background and a flooded rice field in the foreground.

2 Quilts accepted into the Sisters Outdoor Quilt show!

http://www.sistersoutdoorquiltshow.org/index.htm I have been notified by mail that the 2 quilts I entered into the quilt show have been accepted! wahoooo! I will get pictures this week to show the ones that are traveling to Sisters!

Acquisitions

This Bunny Hill fabric came in on Saturday from the Fat Quarter Shop. I see a baby quilt in it's' future.
From Big Horn Quilts I got this ruler in the mail and it had a bonus tool!

5/1/09

Today's goal

Today's Goal: Do not order anything on line. Look at all the wonderful blogs and get inspiration only! It is so hard to do since there is so much great new quilting fabric and notions and patterns and books out there just calling my name! I did start working on my stitchery, long may she wave, last night. Oh how I love stitchery. Wish there was more of it in the USA, only because it is so hard to get all of the lovely patterns from Australia. Have a great weekend!

Lizzie

4/30/09

My new kit plus free book when I bought the kit! From Jan Patek
My new Fig Tree Quilts book

My new dish towel and pattern from Pat Sloan

4/27/09

Harmony

I received this nice little bundle in the mail on Friday. Yummmy! I shopped at the Fat quarter shop and got a great deal for all three bundles.

4/22/09

fabric line?

Does anyone remember this line of fabric? I need backing and can't remember what is is called or who makes it. This was a layer cake. thanks in advance.

Serious addiction to quilt books

The newest additions to my quilt book collection. all yummy!

4/21/09

Freddy and Gwen Collaborate again!

Got my new book in the mail last night. woosh-ha.... This one is published by Lark Books so I hope the binding stays together better than the previous book. Happy Reading!

4/20/09

new glove mold

I have wanted one of these forever and finally found one! http://www.laurieannas.com/ I first saw it on a blog, http://cherryhillcottage.typepad.com/cherryhill_cottage/2009/04/vintage-glove-mold.html I am very happy with my purchase. It has so many design possibilities, but for now it holds some button jewelry I bought in Sisters a few years back.

Tractor ride

Yesterday I went for an hour ride in this tractor with my son. It is like riding in a Cadillac. Step two of spring work before the rice gets planted. In the background is Richvale CA rice dryer.

4/15/09

Getting the sewing area together

This is my new sewing area. A bit smaller than the previous house but the atmosphere is more like home. The sewing machine cabinet was my grandmothers and I cherish it. I don't use the machine inside, I just sit mine on top.
This is my fabric closet. One of two. The other one has 5 bins with finished quilts of all sizes in it. I did some hand quilting last night because it was a tad cool and 50 mph winds. I watched the movie Nights in Rodanthe (one star)and worked on the quilt top my 94 year old friend Grace hand made for me. I love that quilt so much I wanted to hand quilt it myself.

4/13/09

Swarm-o-bees

The image is not that great but you get the idea. While we were waiting for the BBQ to be done for Easter lunch a hive of bees moved into a hole in the tree next to the deck. We were glad that the BBQ was a bit smokey. They didn't bother us any and it was very interesting to see nature at work. I did have a very interesting Easter, my son taught me to drive the tractor. The garden tractor actually, I helped till the garden and I have to admit it was fun. Of course it was on low gear and in slow mo compared to the way he works but I still had fun.

4/10/09

Future Quilter

My friend Pammy gave me her unwanted fabric. So I had fun last night with my granddaughter. We emptied the bags on the floor and Miss Emma did what I wish I could do, roll in it and love it! She had so much fun just feeling that scrumptious fabric that I know she will some day be a quilter. Her love for fabric has obviously started. Now to just find some time to start another project!

4/9/09

The Wave Petunia

Last year I won a flat of Wave Petunia's from Lowe's. They survived the frost and winter and are blooming again. they are prolific and so beautiful. I plan on buying some this year.

Dear DIL on the John Deere

My dear DIL on the John Deere taking care of business. That is a rice field in the background. They have just broken ground this year and are in the midst of spring work. My son says in 75 days he will have a day off. good thing he loves being a farmer.

Box mountain revisited

Well, box mountain has been moved to a different location. I need to take a new image since this one was taken I have finished putting the books away. It feels so much better.
And this is my sewing area since I moved. I have gone from a 10 x 10 sewing room to a corner in my bedroom. since this photo was taken I have organized it as well and my machine is plugged in and ready to go. Luckily I have a large closet wall where the stash is stored.

4/3/09

Thursday night market and the beautiful sky

The first Thursday night market in Chico CA for this year was last night. It wasn't very big but they did have some nice flowers and some Strawberries.

The Strawberries came all the way from Watsonville CA. But boy were they good. I bought one of those lovelies and we had them over vanilla ice cream after dinner. yummmm
Then on the drive home the clouds were so beautiful. This is Richvale CA with the clouds over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Love the valley where you can see the sky. The large buildings are the only industry in Richvale CA. RICE! They have officially started breaking ground for the year.

4/1/09

ahhhhhhhhhhhh the good life, a view of The Buttes

It has been a very busy couple of weeks for me but I am almost completely moved. This is the view from my back yard. Isn't it wonderful? I have been told since I was a small child that the Buttes are the smallest most complete mountain range in the world. I don't know if it is true or not but I like the lore.

3/23/09

Almost moved!

This image shows both sons and their trucks and trailers in the background. The blue truck was used, get this, for fabric filled bins only. It was full and the rest had to be moved in the back of the large covered trailer.

Once again my sons have done their magic and moved me in a way that I could have never done alone. I am very proud and thankful! They can drive anything and back huge trailers into any space, fill and empty them without effort. I am grateful to family and friends for all of their hard work. The weather Saturday was perfect. Windy, cool and a little bit of a sprinkle. By the end of the day I was so exhausted and hurting that I had a glass of wine and slept very well. Old age is not for sissy's. I don't think there is going to be any sewing for awhile. When I find my things I will start again, but for now, I have to put my organizational skills to work. I do have one stitchery project in my purse in case of an emergency urge to sew something. ta ta for now...

3/19/09

Moving mess! or Box mountain!

My world is in transition right now. This is my living room. It is beyond mess. A simple path to walk through to get to the important stuff. My weekend will consist of deciding what to put in storage and what to move to the smaller place. Not a huge deal, just a lot of work. Thanks to the help of my son Jake it is possible. He is a God send when it comes to helping. I appreciate my children so very much for all they do for me! I am truly blessed. In fact while I am at work today he will be there doing a move for me with no help. That is love! I don't think any quilting is going to get done in the near future. So until I get organized.....
